It’s always a good idea to proactively take inventory of your cleaning supplies and restock the essentials when you move into a new apartment — or resign your lease. While everyone’s preferences about cleaning supplies may vary based on their individual needs, there are plenty of tried-and-true products every homeowner or renter should have on hand. Here’s a handy checklist to help you stock your supply closet.

Disinfecting Wipes

If you’re in a hurry or need to clean up a small spill, disinfectant wipes can be lifesavers. They’re great for wiping down the kitchen counter, cleaning the inside of your microwave, and sanitizing frequently touched surfaces, like doorknobs and cabinet hardware.

Broom, Vacuum, and Mop

Don’t forget the floor: Make sure you have a broom or vacuum (or both!) to take care of crumbs, dirt, and pet hair. You should also consider getting a mop to keep the kitchen and bathroom tile clean.

Dish Soap

Keep a bottle of dish soap in the kitchen so you can easily clean up after making a meal. If you have a dishwasher you’ll need dishwasher pods or detergent, but dish soap is still a must for scrubbing any items that aren’t dishwasher safe.

All-Purpose & Bathroom Cleaners

An all-purpose cleaner is important for general cleaning, but it’s also helpful to have a bathroom cleaner because they’re specifically formulated to be used on surfaces like the tub or shower, tile, toilet, and mirror. If you don’t have any old rags to use with the cleaner, you’ll want to order some inexpensive ones.

Microfiber Duster

A microfiber duster makes dusting things like blinds, the tops of shelves and ceiling fans, and light fixtures quick and easy. If you’re going to be dusting tall surfaces, look for an option that has an extendable handle.

Laundry Detergent & Dryer Sheets

Whether you have a shared laundry space or a machine inside your apartment, you will need laundry detergent and dryer sheets to help keep your clothes, towels, and sheets fresh. Make sure you have a laundry basket or hamper, too.
